Magnetic footprints do remain but after all that time it is almost certain that they will have now been overwritten too many times. Only very expensive equipment (such as that used by the FBI) would have the remotest chance of retrieval.
I tend to disagree with that statement as it doesn't recover the origional names of files and that is a big drawback to me. The only paid one I had great results on was file scavenger, as you found all the origional files and names. It also has a trial to see what is recoverable on the HD and allows so many bytes of info recovery for free.
