Specs: Windows xp
I want to dial a phone number from my pc to see if the phone number is active. I don't actually need to have a conversation. I just want to see if the phone is valid.

If you are hooked up with a modem and your computer it should be easy. If you are trying via eathernet you will probably want some software.

With XP, assuming you have a dial-up modem, just go to START--RUN and type in DIALER. Click the 'dial' option and type in the number you want to call in the box that opens and then click 'place call'.

I'm not sure if that'll work if you have an ethernet connection but I guess it won't hurt to try.

If you want to make a phone call, you'll need to connect your phone line to your modem if you have one on your computer.

Using Dialer, you can then call the number by selecting Phone Call, typing in the number, and clicking "Place Call."

If you don't have a modem, that feature won't work, and you'd only be able to use the "Internet Call" option.

Why not just use your landline or cellphone to check the phone number?
