can i copy the preinstalled windows xp on my hard drive so i can place it on my new hard drive ive just bought all i have is the restore disk but it doe's not contain my os its all preinstalled but i need to changed my hard drive as the one i'm using is 40gb USE

If the new HDD is made by Western Digital. Then a "Data Lifeguard Tools" floppy comes with the HDD. WD's website claims that it can transfer data from old to new.

you could use norton ghost (or something similar) to copy an image of your existing HDD to your new HDD.

Why don't you just slave the new drive to your existing harddrive jumpered as the master.
Another alternative will be to bite the bullet and purchase an OEM copy of XP from the same retailer you got your harddrive from, it will be considerably cheaper and it will come in handy.

The restore disk that you recieved with your computer contains all the system files - That is why it is called a restore disk, it will restore the computer as it was when you bought it.
