You cannot use two cable modems and what you need is called a router. A router takes the single IP your ISP gives you and via DHCP will assing the computers connected to it an IP address. My setup is a little more advanced but I have my cable modem which is connected to my linksys firewall and the firewall connects to my netgear switch and all the computers plug into the switch but the router hands out the IP range and allows all them to share one connection.

You do not need a router if you have a newer cable modem with both Ethernet and USB connections. I connected my kids hp to ethernet and mine to USB without any problems!

You might want them both in the same room if you do it this way though..

Does not sound like the computers are in the same room and this person might have to run cable even with a router. While wireless is the simplest solution it is not always the cheapest and can be a major pain in the butt to setup. Wireless is far from flawless and you never know how well it will work till it is setup.

If you do go wireless you need to replace your NIC's get a wirelss router and make sure you secure the Wireless Access Point. This means chaning the default password, disabling the broadcast of the SSID and use WEP/WPA as well as MAC filtering to keep the network secure from outsiders.

See how complicated wireless can become. I would get a wired router and run some cable but then again running cable is not always simple either but it does simply work and is a lot more secure.

Hello All,

"is it possible to use 2 cable modems for internet??.."

YES, depending upon your isp, it is possible. But integrating that possibility, would more than likly cost you in the form of opening another account. The isp has to have a record of the MAC address for the cable modem for it to work on their service. One can not just hook one up a go surfing. That's how they secure it. Otherwise, any one who had cable, would also be able to 'get' internet for nothing. I ran into that problem playing 'medal of honor' online here. I had set up a four computer LAN, hooked to a linksys cable/dsl router, which is hooked to the cable modem. More than one person online, from same IP number, can't join the same game. It boots us both out. So I had called them about options. Either get another IP number for one modem, with two being their max, or get another modem service and two IP's for each one. All of us wanted to play at same time, but I opted for only getting one more IP for the one modem. Really didn't feel like paying $100+ dollars a month for two modems.!! My setup is very much like Kevin's setup he mentioned, except I only use the router as firewall, I don't use a seperate box for that. Works great for us.
I would go with the majority here. wireless is convenient, but without spending a lot of money, you could run it 'wired' at 100 or 1000, a little cheaper than going wireless. Plus, not all the initial headaches of wireless. Just to get you going, if both computers have the NIC cards installed and working, all you should need would be a cable/dsl router. Which are pretty cheap. They can be bought for under $50 around here. I paid $35 for mine.

If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!
