Hello All.
Can any one tell me; what is a "C:\a.bat" trojan horse, how do i remove it and how harmful is it and who benfits from it. I've run my anti virus software along with the most popular anti spy software, and when I do a search of my computer the file: "C:\a.bat" shows up as a DOS file.
Any Ideas????
Thanks. Chuck

The "C:\a.bat" is the location and the filename. We need to know the name of the trojan horse to tell you kow dangerous it is. It may be a very simple one which does very little damage or it could log your keystrokes and transmit them off. The people who receive your details are the ones who benefit as they could get hold of usernames, password, card numbers - anything you type in.

You often get trojans with downloaded software, i.e. games from Peer-to-Peer software such as LimeWire. Email is often another common way of getting infected with a trojan. NEVER open an attachment when you don't know the sender, and always err on the side of caution even when you do know the sender just in case they have sent you something dodgy or their address has been spoofed (faked).

A .bat file is a batch file which can run a series of commands. You may be able to simply delete it. Open My Computer and double click on C:. You should see the file in there. Simply right click on it and delete it.
If you can't see it, click Start, Run and type 'cmd'. Hit OK and then type del c:\a.bat at the command prompt.

If all else fails you can visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run a system scan.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

It might help to post the contents, so folks here could see it; no tellin' from the name what's in it.

Further to what M2G writes. A .BAT file is a plain text file that you should be able to open with any text editor, such as Notepad, without any harm being done.
