hello,
i have a problem with winxp pro. for some reason i get the c0000218 error message. you know the one with the registry error hive error and all that junk. well i have the installation disk and i really need many of the files that are on my comp so im not looking at reformatting as an option, i need those files. i have tried using the recovery console but i cannot get past the administrator password part. i dont remember ever setting one. i have tried "admin" and "administrator" as the password but to no avail. i have been working on the problem for about a day and a half now and no progress has been made. by the way i do have a bootdisk, which allowed me to get into the recovery console. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks to all who read this.

Repair your XP Installation
1.Reboot with your XP CD
2.Select Windows Setup(Ignore Repair@ this point)
3.Press F8 to accept EULA
4.Now press R to repair your damaged XP installation..Your configuration and files should be intact.GoodLuck

how do i get my comp to reboot from my xp cd. ive had to use a 6 disk xp floppy boot disk to get into any options at all. i havent tried to get my comp to boot from my xp cd, im not sure if i know how.

I get the c0000218 BSoD andwhen i tried doing the repair with the cd, nothing worked. I don't want to lose the files on the computer. I have done a chkdsk and it said there was errors on my computer. I can't seem to do a scandisk. what can I do?

I am having the exact same problem!! Cannot access my xp pro. here is a printout of what error im getting
STOP: c0000218 {Resistry File Failure)
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable
--------------
Then it starts a memory dump.
I loaded another copy of xp onto the same drive in the attempt to find this hive file and "fix" it.
Of course i cant access my "my documents" directory under my name from the initial install.
Is this a new virus. That just KILLS machines.
Any assistance would be helpful.

Damn,
This thing is happening to me to. The diff. is that I have a SCSI drive connected to a SCSI card.
Drive is Seagate ST318404LW
Card is Adaptec SCSI 19160WIN2K SP2 installed. I found this article from Microsoft that relates to my problem but for WINNT.
Microsoft KB 104203
Any clues?
