You mean when you double-click the drive icon in Windows Explorer it opens up in a command prompt?

Not quite. Its OK through windows explorer but I have a My Computer shortcut on my desktop and I double click to open that then click on the C: and the command window opens.
I also have a C drive shortcut on my desktop and this also opens in command window.

What the heck is Command Window? If you don't mean Command Prompt, you must meant Windows Explorer, no?

When you have the "My Computer" folder open, right click on the C: and what is the first thing listed? Command Prompt?

Sound likes a program may have hijacked the default command to me, a Hex editor I have puts in a 'Dos Prompt from here' menu item but at least it's not the default. I deleted it anyway.

Right click the shortcut and select 'properties' to see what it says and change it to just say C:\.

Or, try the Folder Options and select 'folder' to see if you can delete the "Open Command Window Here" if it is there. If you wish to keep it you should be able to change the Default to the 'Open' action.

If unable to remove from there try from any [or all] of these three locations in the Registry and delete the subkey. You won't die if you do this.

Hkey_Classes_Root
.+ Directory
..+ shell

.+ Drive
..+ shell

.+ Folder
..+ shell

If none of these you could type in the find in Regedit for 'Open Command from here' and see what turns up, my guess it's on the My Computer ClassID shell subkey which I think is this..

HKEY_Local_Machine
.+ Software
..+ CLASSES
...+ CLSID
....+ {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
.....+ shell

Hope it was helpful

As I thought. I've seen this behavior on two different XP machines... Currently working on a fix, but from the order of commands, the correct thing is happening; the Command Window is opening up.

I'll do some research and get back to you..
