I need to purchase an operating system for a laptop that has no OS or software installed. I prefer Windows XP. Where is the best(cheapest) place to purchase this.

A legal full retail version of XP Pro w/SP2 will set you back about $300...XP home about $200.

I have bought several from NEWEGG. XP-Pro, and XP64-Pro. IIRC they last ones were about $130-$140. NEWEGG ships them fast!

probably not, since XP is doing well for personal and business use. Plus to get vista, it's a brand new loaded machine. I wouldn't try upgrading to vista.

AFAIK, XP is Vista's only "serious" competition as far as the horizon - so that won't happen........... and, if anything; the situation with XP's SP3 delivery status is perhaps a clue.

BTW, it would be nice if you posted the full specification of the laptop and what you primarily intend to use the notebook for.

XP home Sp2 OEM about $89.00 to $100.00.
XP Pro Sp2 OEM about $139.00 no need to buy the retail. OEM is cheaper just go to a PC Shop or look on ebay and you will have to purchase hardware with OEM but it can be something as little has an IDE cable.
