That depends on the capabilities of your DVD player. Some will run AVI and MPEG, others won't

What Richard is talking about is your HOME DVD player, not the burner in your computer.
Most home DVD players do not play movies in file formats like AVI, and even less will play MPEG files.

You most likely will need to convert them to DVD and then burn them.

i have two: an emerson and and a $40 magnovox from wal-mart.
i have dvdflix converter and it takes about 5 hrs to convert. is there a faster converter out there for free or a resonable price? 5 hrs just seems to long to convert.
is that a reasonable time? i know theres got to be something faster.

I personally use "DVD Santa" it converts and burns almost any type of video file to DVD in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

They have a free trial:

There are also some older versions that work just fine available on the net :)

I use WinAVI to convert all my .avi movie files to dvd format.

5 hours is just waaaaaay too long for any conversion program, but I guess that depends on how big a movie file you're trying to burn? For me, a 700mb movie file typically takes about 45 minutes to convert (sometimes an hour at the most) using WinAVI.

Also... I should mention that if it's still taking that long while using ANY dvd conversion program, then you might want to go into your device manager and check to make sure that your dvd-rw drive is set in DMA Mode, and not stuck in PIO Only mode. If it's in PIO Only mode, that'll definitely slow your burning speeds down in taking hours and hours for a single disc.

You're very much welcome! WinAVI is a great program that hasn't let me down when it comes to quick conversions of movie files.

And oops! I made a mistake about going into your device manager to check if it's set to DMA Mode. That's a fix for slow disc burning, NOT for slow dvd conversions. :)
