I recently purchased a sony 16x dual-layer dvd burner. I've tried 3 different softwares to burn data (mpeg,avi,etc..)to dvd-r's, ("copy to dvd", "nero", "dvdrw maker"). Dvdrw maker is the software that came with the burner. The problem is...on the 4th burn, windows won't recognize the files burned to the disc. It recognizes the files from the previous 3 sessions, but not the 4th. Sometimes it won't recognize the files even after 2 burns, 3 burns is the most i've ever gotten to work. I'm leaving enough space on the disc for the 4th burn, and i'm leaving the session open (multisession). I don't understand what the problem is. I've wasted over 20 dvd-r's trying to get it right, I'm sick of making coasters. Somebody please HELP!

Did u format the DVD-R disks? If u did... ure not suppose to. Oh and disable the option known as "Multisession Disk."

"By the fourth burn' do you mean the fourth track , in an open session? Why don't you try to get all your music/files togeather prior to burning and burn at one time. I haven't really had any luck doing multy burns in an open session. It seems to always come up with some error, unless the machine was rebooted prior to adding more data

I did not format the discs. And if i uncheck multisession, i won't be able to add any more files to that disc.

I'm not trying to be a smart a**, but the software "copy to dvd", says that i can burn to the same disc up to 99 times.

G'day Four, believe it or not, this is from what I understand a common problem with burning data discs especially in Win98 [I know what you are going thru] but it should see multisessions in SP2, it does with my XP Home SP1.
Windows 98 won't see after a first session and nor does Win2000 unless SP4 is installed [this I know from first-hand experience] I don't know of any patch for 98 to correct this. My DvD rewriter was brand new prior to X-mas but may be obsolete by now.
My multisession DVD-R data discs DO show sessions beyond the first [even small sessions] in XP home so who said DVD's are 'burn-once' I use Sonic's Record Now that came with the recorder but Roxio 6 onwards should work ok too.
A program named Isobuster can see all sessions on a DVD data disc [even in 98 although 98 can't itself see them] and I use this to confirm them. It can extract data from even the first session. It is not burning software.
I did read somewhere that there could be a minimum limit of data on a disc before multisessions can be read but that might be for ealier versions of Windows. Perhaps SP2 has stuffed something up. Can you uninstall SP2 and work with SP1 ?
My guess is that the sessions are there just waiting to be read. Does your burning software see the last session(s) ?
Perhaps , if your drive supports DVD-RW, you can store data until you have enough for a full DVD-R discs and avoid multi-sessions
And DVD coasters can be more expensive that CD coasters

Hi Ronnie Ratt, To answer your question, Yes, my burning software recognizes the last session burned, but windows won't. I don't understand. It should work just like burning data to a cd-r. If windows won't recognize all the files on the disc, what's the use of backing up files. I'll never be able to get them back on my hardrive, unless I just keeping backing up with cd-r's
but that's the whole reason i bought a dvd burner, so i could condense my media. I have 100's & 100's of cd-r's packed full of mpeg,avi,etc...I could cut that down by 75%
(If i could get it work). Anymore help would be appreciated. Thanks!I recently bought a sony 16x dual layer dvd burner. I've tried 3 different softwares to burn DATA to dvd-r's copy to dvd, nero, and dvdrw maker dvdrw maker is the one that came with the burner. None o

G'day again Four, the only thing I can offer at the moment is that you look for and backup this file from your System\Drivers folder, it is udfs.sys, and then see if you can find and download this version of the same file 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920) and copy over the one you have in the drivers folder. I think this file can be easily found somewhere.
I don't guarentee this will work but I can't understand why XP won't see all sessions, It does in my version [2002]. I too had the same lofty ambitions and frustrations as you about reducing my discs in Win 98 but discovered it seems not to see beyond the first session in that OS so I had to reinstall XP home to get it right.
If it doesn't work either just copy back the original file you backed up.
