I just bought myself a dvd burner. Removed the old CD burner which was primary master and replaced it with the DVD burner exact cables and all. When i boot my 'puter the lights go green on it and I can open and close it. It gets past the BIOS to the loading screen and it goes mute. No lights and won't load. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers.
PS. It won't come up in Nero Test Drive or My Computer... not even under Device Manager

Uninstall Nero using the General-Clean Tool then reinstall Nero. That should solve your problem
Lessons learnt the hard way are not easily forgotten.

If Windows doesn't see it and it isn't even showing up as an unknown device in Device Manager then your BIOS probably is in fact having trouble detecting it. I see three solutions. 1. Your BIOS isn't detecting it properly--upgrade your BIOS (flash it); 2. Your BIOS isn't detecting it properly--take it back and get a new device your BIOS will support properly; 3. Your device's firmware is corrupt (unlikely but possible)--replace the device.

BIOS does detect my new burner... at startup it displays the model number, listing it as Primary Master. So maybe it's a problem with my XP. Reformatting XP soon so i'll post a follow-up

Besure to check your connections really well.
Also what other drives (all ) are listed in your system. You might try to disconnect any USB connections and then try to see if it sees it.

It is definitely connected good there is lights and it will open when in BIOS and before the XP loading screen.. but once it gets to the loader it is inoperable.
Will remover all USB connections and see if that helps.

Update - Removed all the USB connections but still no change. Might be a problem with my actual XP seeing as it works fine before XP loads up.

Do you happen to have an extra drive that you can substitute for the dvd player. If you do swap them out and see if it will recognize the different drive. If anything that will tell us it is not the drive or it is the drive.
They do just go out from time to time. and I have had then show up as working drives and be bad.

By the way did you check to make sure the jumper is set properly. If the jumper is set wrong it will show up in the bios and not in the OS. look carefully at it and make sure it is not opposite of where it should be.
