I'd checked these registry keys

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->Windows->Current Version->Run

Current User->...same as top.

If there is some thing within these two folders that outright appear to be junk or spyware then I'd delete it. If your not sure back up the key by going to the File Menu and export it first before you delete it. This way you can always reimport it later if it was somthing important. Reboot your machine and see what happens. Run adaware on it and hopefully everything disappears.

If all else fails you could always backup your data and reinstall XP. I tend to reinstall XP even couple of months to clean up stuff.

TECHZAPORT OUT!!!

Before i formatted and started over i would suggest a nice virus scan using AVG 6.0, which is free and a spyware scan using ad-aware 6.0 and spybot search and destroy. You will be supprised how much stuff these last to programs will fix. All of them are free. Let us know how you do.

System Restore option in Windows Me/XP
http://www.augustana.ab.ca/other/cns/virus/
http://www.adamtj.org/repository/howto/W32.Blaster.Worm/
Users of Windows Me and Windows XP should temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file onto your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.

For instructions on how to turn off System Restore, read your Windows documentation, or one of the following articles:
How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore

You may be able to get more info from the Event viewer .

================================

Windows XP Events and Errors
Enter the message source and ID in the text field, then click G

Or ,

Or ,

Windows Error Generator

Ever wondered what Error(312) means ? Look it up with this, or have it list all the errors your operating system is able to give. Also good for programmers who need to throw a specific system error. Go to Software menu.

===================================

If you want to stop a blue screen auto reboot so you can read the error message from the screen:

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
Go to Advanced
Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"
