Bug with Safely Remove Hardware

Comment:
Every time I click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" button, my internet connection (broadband via ASDL) is lost and the connection cannot always be restarted without booting up. This happens even before I specify which bit of hardware I wish to remove. It has only started happening within the last week.
What may be happening and what can I do to correct it.

What device are you trying to safely remove? It might not be necessary to use 'safely remove'.

The devices include external HDDs, a music device and a scanner. I appreciate that the devices may in actuality not need to be removed "safely" but the fact that simply clicking on the icon causes my internet connection to be broken suggests to me that something has gone wrong and such things should not be left broken in case the problem begets other problems.
