CPU/Ram: Q6600/2048Gb
Product: Custom

I am running XP on a Western Digital WD1500ADFD SATA HD, but I want to format it and re-install XP since it has been awhile since I have done that. Trouble is, I keep getting a BSoD 0x0000007B error during after the XP CD loads all appropriate files. How did I get the OS on there in the first place? Well I actually just did a Drive-to-Drive copy from my old HD, but doing that won't work this time, for various reasons. As I am actually typing this message on the HD I want to format, there is obviously no problem with the HD, or the memory, or anything else. It all checks out fine. Before I go on, here are some system specs:

Mobo: ASUS P5K-E (BIOS: 1013)
Hard Drive: WD1500ADFD
Memory: 2x1Gb OCZ
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

I have tried updating the BIOS (was a much older version before i flashed it to 1013) and of course I have tried pressing F6 in the XP Installer screen, and loading up recent JMicron 36x RAID drivers. I have also checked out the 0x7B help on microsoft's website, but nada. Still BSoD.

My SATA drive is set to be read as an IDE in the BIOS, since I only have the one drive, and I don't want RAID. I also have a Ultra133 TX2 PCI IDE Controller card (since the mobo I have only has one BUS directly on it), but I don't think that should be causing any problems...

I have searched for this topic on several forums, but so far not really any useful information has turned up. I get the feeling that this problem is quite common. If anyone can shed some light on how to fix this, it would be appreciated.

I've found a few references and sorry if you've tried them already. Do you have the SATA drivers on floppy that you created from the motherboard driver disk? Have you tried the ICH9R ACHI SATA driver rather than the RAID driver you mention?
Also try installing with only one stick of ram.
I saw a post on another forum where that was the final solution. Good luck.

Yes, I have tried both the JMicron as well as the ICH9 drivers. Yes, they were on the floppy, and I selected them after pressing F6 in the XP pre-install. Removing a stick of RAM unfortunately did not help either.

Does it matter which 36x driver I choose? I think I've gone through most of them anyway, 361-366.

If it matters, the HD is listed as an IDE Host Controller in Data Lifeguard Tools.

The boot sequence I have selected in the BIOS is as follows:

IDE:U (This is the PCI IDE Controller--but only my CD/DVD-Drive is hooked into it)
HDD: WD1500ADFD
Floppy
CD-ROM

During instal you would normally select either CDROM or Floppy as first boot device. I would recommend not using a device attached to the PCI IDE controller for your instal media. Connect a CDROM to the onboard IDE channel and instal from there. You can always add the PCI device later.

Have you disconnected any external devices (USB, etc)?

Why did you change hard drives? Was it because you were having problems?

You can download and run DelPart to remove any partitioning on the drive to make sure you start from scratch.

@ Richard59
Actually its kind of weird. Unless I set it to boot the IDE:U first, then it will skip right over the fact that there is a boot CD in the drive. I guess that makes sense tho, I will try connecting my CD directly to the onboard BUS and see if that makes a difference.

@ aegis
I'm not changing hard drives, I just want to format it. I originally changed from a 40Gb PATA to a 150Gb Raptor, because I wanted 10,000RPM as a boot drive. I want to format, because I have been doing drive to drive copies of this HD for probably about 9 years, and its a total jungle of garbage by now. It works fine for the most part, but it is also still FAT32, and I want NTFS.

What I have also noticed is that if in the BIOS I set the drive to run as anything but IDE, it will not boot.

---------SOLVED---------

As it turned out, it was a problem with the Ultra133 TX2 PCI IDE Controller card and the DVD-Drive. I hooked it into the main on-board Bus and worked like a charm. Everything is running beautifully now.

Thanks everyone!
