I'm trying to fix a friends PC. It is a Touch Systems with a MSI A8V-MX board and 2GB of RAM. It has onboard video but it's using a video card instead. It also has a DVD burner on the secondary IDE master and a SATA hard drive on the third IDE master. So...

I'm getting the BSOD Stop: 000000D1 error right after the Windows logo appears and also sometimes right after the mouse appears. It also does this in safe mode. I've taken out one of the RAM chips and then swapped them to no avail. I tried a XP repair and it copied files, then restarted and still got the error after the XP logo. I have ERD Commander 2007, but I'm not very familiar with it.

OK, so the PC worked fine and then my friend moved it to another house and then immediately got the error message. There is nothing loose at all anywhere inside and nothing has changed that I know of.

Mostly when computers play up after moving them it is down to a connection problem somewhere. Often this is due to a minute amount of oxide on edge connectors. Vibrations move cards fractionally onto an oxidised surface.

Clean RAM and Display Card edge connectors with a pencil eraser. Pop the RAM sticks and Display Card in and out a few times after cleaning, to clear oxide off the sockets themselves.

Recheck all cable connectors once again - pull them out and pop them back in again firmly.

Works now. I just took everything out and sprayed contact cleaner on everything and then air blasted it.
