A friend's laptop crashed and I need to backup his HD. I swapped HD's, took out my HD and plugged in his HD into my laptop. Of course I get the BSOD with the stop error 00000007B since it will not recognize the new hard drive. I tried the chkdsk /r and the fixboot commands in recovery console but cant get xp home to boot. I experinced this problem in the past but forgot how to resolve it. I remember some commands or files that were copied in console to resolve. -thanks

Swapping an XP installed drive to another physical system and attempting to boot from it will not work - you get the problem you have. Drivers etc. are not correct for the transplanted drive installation.
Usual recommended approach is to run XP repair routine(s).
However you are trying to recover/backup data from this drive??? Presuming so it might be easier to put this drive into another desktop system (as a Slave) and access/backup data that way? There are suitable adapters that allow laptop (2.5ins) drives to be installed into a standard desktop PC.
