Running Windows XP w/IE 6.0 & COX@Home cable modem.

Problem happens about 5% of the time while browsing. Noticed problem soon after installing then uninstalling AdAware 5.62.

Have scanned system for virus, Trojans, etc. and found nothing.

On occasion, I will type in a URL but a different page, one that I visited recently in the current or a past browsing session, will load. It's as if it's pulling from the cache or temp internet files. The URL I typed remains in the Address bar, but the page I'm looking at is not the desired page. What's very strange is that even if I clear the cache, delete temp. folders, history, cookies, you name it - a recently visited site may still load in place of the desired URL. This has happened even after I close the browser, clean the cache, etc., and start a completely new browsing session.

Another problem, likely related, is that when browsing, clicking links, etc., I'm getting many more "HTTP 404- File Not Found" error messages than ever before. It's usually one after the other and for different sites so it's clearly my browser/system that's the problem.

Hitting Refresh, or retyping the desired URL, fixes the problem about 50% of the time. Closing & reopening the browser usually fixes it when Refresh doesn't. When the problem persists, or happens multiple times over the course of a session, it's usually the same recently visited page that loads.

Very strange . . . any ideas?

Hi,

Woow, I guess the best way to do right now is trying to download that IE6 again and hope that could solve the problem.

Peace

Are you using a software firewall? ie; ZoneAlarm, Norton...
If not you should try one, zonealarn doesn't try to rule your system like Norton...
This will give you a better idea of what is using the bandwidth, either program will identify each pragram attempting internet access...
I installed XP fresh Saturday, noticed a lot of hard drive activity, then loaded ZoneAlarm and had 64 blocked ip addresses in ten minutes. Neotrace is a great program for chasing the list of ip addresses...
With the cable modem, it is suggested that you unplug it for 5 to 10 minutes to allow it to get a different ip...
