where are you downloading from?

if its a P2P like winMX or Shareaza then it can depend on network traffic. (god help you if its kazaa!)

i have a 512k connection and ive only ever had 400kb/s at most, and its BT business broadband!

it can depend alot on network traffic, just like your old 56k did

Sorry? From reading those and other forums dedicated to optimizing broadband speed and the tweaks they offer, I have found that tweaking your TCP Receive Window, MTU and other Registry values can definitely make a difference in broadband speeds.

I am amazed that you could read through all those links in twenty-two minutes.

Go to Broadband Reports and read up on the tweaks section. Then run the tweaks test and it'll give you ideas on things to change. Then try a speed test.

USB modem perhaps?? I'm betting it is. Probably 90% of my customers who complain about slow broadband are using the USB connected POS that the cable company left for them.

Hook it up Ethernet style if you can. Most modems have both options.

BTW broadband tweaks are pretty useless really. MTU size changes and all that other crap are just that...crap.

Go to Pcpitstop - run all the tests - then you will have solid info on your entire computer including internet.

Then you can begin to solve your web connection problem.

Without a baseline diagnostic you only have adhoc info telling you you have a slow connection - it could be the other end of your connection that is slow.

Good luck

I don't think there is a lot you can do,besides complain to your ISP. But I would bet they will say that your connection speeds are up to 600Kb/s. And most won't even think about fixing it till you are way below that mark. Keep in mind the difference between connection speed measured in Kb/s and transfer speeds which are usually measured in KB/s. So your 600Kb/s connection will download at 75 KB/s. I know you are still under half rated speed, but that can depend on a lot of different conditions. I bet if you download at night when there are fewer people online in your area you will achieve the speeds you expect.

JIMI_1 thanx for the tip it actually did make a difference, when i download small files such 3 or 4 mb files then it reaches about 100kb or 200kb but its still a bit slow when am downloading big files when they are about 60 or 70mb...
