Hi,

has anyone else experienced this same problem? I have 3 phones in the house all on the same line (fitted by telstra), however when I installed broadband on my PC i have to put inline filters on 2 of the phones, and a normal filter on one of them to allow the phone and internet to work at the same time.

The only problem with this is that now when you talk on the phone the person sounds very soft and it is very difficult to hear. Is there a way to fix this? Or is it just a case of a bad phone line? Someone told me that when getting Broadband you are supposed to ask for a line-check first (well, obviously we never got that!).

Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks,
Michael.

Talk to your phone company. Giving you a good clear line is THEIR responsibility!

I have digital TV, Internet, and regular phone service all threw the phone line... and it's clear and fast...which is the way it should be.

Digital TV via a simple twisted-pair copper wire phone line? I didn't think that standard phones lines could support that much bandwidth (certainly not over very large distances). Who's your provider?

In response to the main question, yes, I have had issues in the past with DSL interference. Both myself and my grandparents have had problems where the DSL service caused enough noise on the line that even with the filters it made for terrible voice communication.

The solution for both of us? Cable Internet service. It's faster and better in every way I can think of. Since I've switched I recommend cable to anyone that asks.

Provider is MTS (Manitoba Telephone Services)

The digital TV believe it or not is a better quality than the cable. I have 5 TV's in the house and I can watch five different channels all at the same time... something that was (and I believe still is) difficult to do with cable.

Anyway...it sounds like your phone company is taking the cheap way out and upgrading their existing equipment instead of replacing it. If that's the case then yes... cable would be a better bet.

Okay thanks. I called my phone company and they are going to send out some new filters/splitters for my phones and we'll see what happens then, but in the mean time thanks for telling me about the cable solution, I'll be sure to check it out.

Interesting... never heard of TV via phone lines before.

I would tend to agree. My guess is that the majority of the problems lie in the telco's tossing DSL hardware on top of antiquated equipment.

Personally I can't wait for the day when everybody has a fiber connection into their home that provides all forms of network access: Internet, TV, phone, video, radio, and all the crazy new stuff they come up with.

Anything you insert into a line will degrade the signal. In your case of the voice signal being of low volume and too soft may simply require a boost in the signal strength. Make sure you stay with the tech every step of the way. A lot of them will come back and say it's fixed and it's not.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...
