For some reason, this is the second compaq I have come into contact with that has had this same problem. on two different computers, the customer said they just purchased the compaq, and when they take it home, their dial-up internet wont work. It will sometimes and sometimes it wont. One person had AOL, which I hated, and his wouldnt even get a connection. He ended up takin his computer back. This one I have now, the neighbors have had the computer for about a week, and said that the internet will sometimes come on and sometimes wont connect. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the modem, done pc diagnostic tests, closed all programs except windows related programs, and it still messes up. They said they have uninstalled and reinstalled juno, and still does the same thing. It just gets me how a BRAND NEW computer does that. If anyone has any suggestions please help. And please dont post saying "well dont use AOL or Juno" or "get cable or high speed internet" or any of those. That defeats the purpose of coming to a forum

More often than not sometimes on, sometimes off connections on dial up are due to a busy ISP, or noise on the line of an older telephone exchange, OR....the customer simply doesn't know what they are doing in setting up a connection.

Either way, I doubt it's the computers.
