Comment:

My friend recently got a virus on his computer. Virus was removed by antivirus, but now when he boots up the computer it loads settings, shows the desktop and shuts down. Is it possible to boot in MS DOS and go into the document and settings folder and get his personal settings before reformatting the computer or can the data be saved without reformatting the drive? Please let me know. Thank you.

MS-DOS isn't a solution, because of short filenames.
If you've got a KNOPPIX CD, you can boot up from cd and copy all necessary files to e.g. USB Stick.

you might try booting into safe mode and do the same thing!

KNOPPIX is a downloadable Linux CD image that can be burned on a CD.
After that, you can start the other PC with the KNOPPIX cd.
You'll get a graphical desktop and have access to all hard disks installed on that computer.
Know you can go to the "Documends and Settings" folder and copy all things you wish.
