boot/restart problems

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 2.805 GHz / 3325 MB
So here's what's happening, I had to do a hard reset and when windows reloaded it told me that my hardware configuration had changed significantly since the last time windows had run and that i needed to authenticate it (which was easily taken care of). Problem being, no hardware has changed on this system since its assembly nearly a year ago. I would appreciate any ideas y'all might have.

run chkdsk /f on the drv to make sure of no disk corruption due to the hard reset.

scan for virus's and mal/spyware. Sounds like you have been hit.
