I messed up my registry and now I can't boot up. I was trying to reinstall a shortcut for my desktop on my taskbar, that I noticed was missing for some reason. When I tried to restart the computer, it's going through a loop and gives a 0000128 stop error. After looking it up on the microsoft site, they recommend restoring to last correct configuration. That didn't work. It won't load in safe mode. I don't have an emergency repair disk. It also recommends reinstalling XP to correct it. I hesitate reinstalling it unless it's the only remedy. Any advice?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

you can goto accessores - system tools - then system restore. If that don't work you gonna have to try to remember what you changed in the registry. If all else falles reinstalling the system is easy the next time around.Try to copy repair from cd,might work

I can't get to accessories because it won't reboot. Are you saying "reinstall XP"? If so, will I lose my present configuration of browsers, internet options, network, etc.?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Have you tried to rebuild the partition?

If you goto- http://www.bootdisk.com/

to create a start up disk for XP on link is down on the XP line but the other two goto
microsoft to allow you to create a floppy.
You may have to change your bios to boot from floppy instead of cd when done change it back

Some of this is new to me...what's a partition?

Fortunately I've got my trusty laptop that I'm using until the desktop is up and running again. My laptop is win98 but in going to the website to create an xp boot disk on a floppy, that shouldn't make a difference, will it?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

A partition, well its hard to explain. But it basically tell your CPU how to start. I don't think it should matter since your going to copy directly to the floppy.

To Hmmm....

I suspect I've made this a harder job than it was because of unawareness.

At this point, I've reinstalled WinXP (into a WinXP folder so it wouldn't overwrite all my settings, etc.) But now many of my programs need reinstalling and I don't know how to get my previous settings. The transfer wizard tells how to get them from one computer to another...but not from one folder to another. I'm in over my head.

If I may go back to square one and address your response, is it too late to do what you suggested? With XP installed in two different windows folders, how will I tell it which registry I'm looking for?

Thanks for any help you can be.
Elizabeth

I am having problems accessing winxp and was thinking of reformatting but you've come up with a solution novel to me. Have you tried booting XP into a DOS shell and then copy c:\[foldername] x:\temp

is your second xp on another hard drive? DId you name it C:\anotherwinxp?
I hope it work if it does please post I might just do this I'd hate to lose all the files they've gone under extensive revision since my last backup.

I've never tried booting into a DOS shell. Just didn't know to do it. I'm not real familiar with the tech stuff. I called the second folder "WINXP". It's on the same hard drive...at least for now. It really didn't go too bad. Though I must say, it was harder than the initial XP installation. There were minor changes in my programs and printers with the first installation. This time I had to reinstall seven (so far) programs. I was able to copy and paste the old desktop so I didn't have to rebuild that. I was able to retrieve my Microsoft Outlook calendar, personal folders and favorites. I still have the address book to locate. AOL came through intact...my personal filing cabinet, emails, addresses and favorite places...didn't even need to reinstall the program. After a little struggling, I got the network reestablished and my internet connections. Glad it's about done. I do accounting on it and is scary until that's up and running.

Thanks for all the help, you guys. This site is the best. I've been helped so many times by it.

Elizabeth

Well I reinstalled WinXP but instead of in another folder I just reinstalled it over the original one and everything - programs files & my doc folder were in C:\Documents_and_Settings\User_Name But
I immediately began getting these errors that locked up the PC:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini123101-01.dmp
C:\Docum~1\username~1.lis\Temp\wer1.dir.0\sysdata.xml ERROR Signature [a list of BCP Codes]
I am afraid your system's current file structure might slowly degrade over time I don't think xp likes having duplicate system folders (or folders with the same name) in different locations. Even though it seemed stable I quickly backed up everything onto network and did a clean install. It seems they built this into the OS so you can retrive your files, because I had even reformatted the disk!

Oops I didn't format until after backing up - don't want to confuse anyone. What is funny is this situation occured under WinME last year and I installed over the old one hoping it would fix the registry but it made it worse.
