Hi all.

A friend I don't hear from very often has asked me a question and I don't really know the answer. He is running a bootleg version of Windows XP Pro. He tried to use the Windows Update site a few days ago and came across the Windows Validation problem. He is giving serious thought to going to a legal version of XP Home. He was wondering if he'd be able to install Windows XP Home and not have to reinstall all the other programs on the PC (word processors, adware, pop-up blockers, a/v software, etc.).

Thanks for the info. But will they have to reinstall everything else or will an over the top installation protect the other programs?

As noted in the article (although I can not state that I like the authoring) you can install over the top wothout disrupting any of th einstalled applications.

Do note that all Windows related updates will need to be reinstalled. This would/could include all device drivers.

I don't think you can go from pro to home. You can go from home to pro but not vice-versa. He will have to do a clean install and stsrt from scratch.

I agree with per, but you can get a oem version of XP Pro for less than $150 why don't he go with that?

He doesn't need to "reinstall" anything, just perform a registry hack at the direction of Microsoft Tech Support. They will issue an electronic license and help change the registry information so he will not have to reinstall all his programs. Just follow the instructions and links on this page to get the correct phone numbers, etc. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows.mspx

Hope this helps...

That is true also, do you know how much MS charges for a new license?

I'm in Canada and those are not the prices up here.

Micro$oft does provide security updates to those who versions of Windows who do not pass the WGA test. They do not, however, provide other support like XP updates. That is the reason he is thinking of getting a valid version of Windows XP. I know my friend quite well and he will not give Micro$oft the name of the person who gave him the Windows XP disc. Perhaps if Micro$oft didn't charge so much for their products and operate with such predatory practices they wouldn't have as many problems with people doing this.

Life is about choices, some good, some bad. Your friend chose badly, and stole software from Microsoft. He had other Operating System software to choose from, but decided to become a criminal, break the law, and steal from Microsoft. Don't blame Microsoft for your friend's bad choices. He made a bad decision, and it is his fault, not Microsoft's. Mr. Gates just happens to have a product we want, and like all businesses, we have to pay for what we want, or do without.

Again, the position your friend is in is his fault, not Microsofts.
