I'm trying to set my computer up so I can boot to MS-DOS, Windows 98, or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. I can boot to x64 and 98 fine, but I can't boot to DOS. According to x64's System Information Utility (judging by the partition sizes and my memory), x64 is on "Disk #0, Partition #0", 98 is on "Disk #1, Partition #1", and MS-DOS is on "Disk #1, Partition #0". x64 is d:\windows, 98 is e:\win98, and MS-DOS is c:\msdos622.

Here's my boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\="Windows 98"

As I said above, x64 and 98 boot fine. I've tried various "multi", "disk", "rdisk", and "partition" settings for MS-DOS, but none of them worked. What confuses me is that 98 boots from "C:\", when the 98 directory is on e:\.

Thanks.

You can't multiboot dos from the same partition. Why? Because msdos, 95/98, ME all have the same file names of io.sys/msdos.sys/command.com yet each needs its version to run.

You can if you use pqboot from Partition Magic and setup separate partitions for your dos boots. You can find the how to I wrote in the How to's [just to the left here] and at the bottom you will see How to use PQboot.

Oh there is a trick you can do but its not via the boot.ini

it is to add bootmenu line item to the msdos.sys and enable it. This should give you a menu option of "previous OS installed" which would be dos 6.22, when you choose 98 to load from the boot.ini menu

see here for contexts http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#TAB
