Now my dads computer is having a problem. PC is running windows xp professional. I'm not sure if he deleted the actual boot.ini or theres a virus. But anyhow after i turn on his pc it says "invalid boot.ini runnings from C:\windows". Even that doesnt do anything, it loads windows then the computer restarts. I've tried using the repair recovery system on the xp cd but when i get done doing bootcfg /rebuild, it says that it failed to implement it into the bootlist. So i dont know what else todo. If anyone has any suggestions. I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

Ignore it. I have the same problem and it's not really worth fixing because as you have found, it will boot quite happily from Windows.

Copy the boot.ini file from your windows directory into the root directory of your hard drive. or copy the backup ini (boot.ini.backup) to the root and rename it to boot.ini.
Try to press F8 as booting, and try Safe Mode, and Best last known configuration see if it work.

Perhaps a repair install (via a CD or the 6 floppies boot); it should do all that's needed. Afterwards you may (probably will) need to re-apply the sp.
