I recently built a computer and installed WinXP Pro w/SP1 on a second HD that was set to slave and was using it as a bootable drive(my primary drive has the same OS). On startup I get the menu to choose between the two OS. They both run fine. Now I took out the slave drive and just want to use my original WinXP OS without getting the dual boot menu(just use 1 HD). What can I do. I'm thinking of editing the boot.ini...but I don't want to screw up and end up not being able to boot at all.
Going to "Starup and Recovery" and then clicking on the "edit" button to bring up the notepad boot.ini editing window shows me the following:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\Windows
[Operating System]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"\fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"\fastdetectI'm planning on editing it to:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"\fastdetectI don't know if the space above [operating systems] does anything. Also when I do get the dual boot menu, choosing the first option loaded the OS from the slave drive, that's why I'm thinking of getting rid of the first line under [operating systems]and changing rdisk to (0).
Any feedback if I'm on the right track will be helpful. I also have a floppy with the boot.ini, NTLDR, and NTDETECT to boot from the floppy just incase.

why dont you just go to start up and recovery, and set it to list your options to '0' seconds, then chose which drive to boot from

Keeping the second option will not use any extra memory or cause any stability issues? I've been using the computer recently and it's been restarting all of a sudden, it hadsn't happened until I took out the second drive. Besides,how about if I want to install another drive with another OS one day and still have that "ghost" OS in the boot menu. I want it gone, not just swept under the carpet. Thanks for the advice but I need to know if that option will work.

keep in mind that if you set the boot time to 0 you won't have access to the recovery console unless you go back and reset.

I have single Windows XP pro on one hard drive and here is what my boot.ini looks like.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Response #3 by Chuck did the trick.
Incidently, the dual boot menu still appears after you delete the OS using bootcfg /delete /ID # in the CMD window(where # is the OS being selected). Instead of a second OS, one of the options becomes: Windows(default). So don't forget to set your OS to default using bootcfg /default /ID # in the CMD window(where # is ,once again, the OS being selected). Once you do that you should not get the menu when you boot.
Thanks again, for all your input.
On a side note, my boot.ini ended up looking like Response #7 by dumass.
