If you want an emergency recovery disk, knoppix is an option.

ubcd4win, has an option to boot to the recovery console & comes with anti virus s/w

WinXP will not easily boot from optical media. This is by MSoft design.

If you use an imaging program and burn directly to CD/DVD you can use it to restore the computer to the exact state it was in at the time of image creation.

Using WinXP system restore can be useful too. Create a restore point prior to installing any new hardware or softwere. If things go south you may be able to perform a restore from Safe mode.

As was suggested above. A live version of Linux can be very useful. Knoppix boots and runs from a CD or DVD.

I've made plenty of UBCD4Win disks. All work great. They are based on Barts which has a similar builder for making a bootable live CD. There are also a few others out there based on Barts PE. You can also use a Vista DVD in you know how.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Your link is to slipstream service packs and updates into the original CD.

I think the OP is looking to RUN XP from the CD.

BTW, the slipstream method works well. Saves alot of time and if your version of WinXP is the original version it also allows installing to harddrives larger than 127GB, which was/is the limit with XP original.

Win2000 slipstreaming is even more critical.

If you want to integrate service packs, drivers & unattended installs, nlite is the best.
