Hi,
I have been asked to make a bootable cdrom for win xp that starts siw. ????

I understand that if xp is already loaded all they need is a cd with autoload...

After twenty plus minutes of trying to explain this,I finaly gave up and said I would make it.

Sounded simple enough but I find I am cluless.

I have boot.ima, boot.ini, ntdetect.com, ntldr ....and will be using Nero

A penny for your thoughts..

you are on very thin ice. The legality that is in question as to what you are trying to do in order to make it work. In essence you are going to have to reverse engineer SIW in order for it to work on the operating system while from DOS. This would truely be against the allowed usage of the SIW program.

SIW may not even be made to run from a DOS environment as it is designed to run from within windows not from outside.

There is a big difference from using a boot disc to using an "auto start" program.

This might be more to what you are looking for:

If you want System Information use the MS-DOS version of HWINFO which can be run from a MS-DOS Bootable CD:

I think this page has the standalone installer.

You don't need anything fancy, like boot.ini files etc

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Just had a look. The standalone installer runs from windows.

If you just want system info try ubcd4win or hirens boot cd.

Bootdisk com sure has changed.LOL! Still have the originial 6 winxp floppy disk and will try to chain them together onto a cd.

Your right in saying siw requires windows not dos. I don't have the skill or the desire to reverse it.
Did get the autorun from moonvally.

3.itguru
Got them from the site you gave. Odd win version is free but the dos version has a time limit. Will give them a shot.

4. clive pearce
Got both and updated my personal version.

Thank you all,

Just to clarify something. The standalone version of SIW doesn't require any installation.

Well I have just completed another World Class useless program.

Made a bootable cd...it boots up Windows.. DUH!
Only use would be on a machine with a corrupt boot.ini file. It does boot my test machine with the corrupt file. But why not just fix it and be done with it.

Once windows is up and running then it will start SIW.....sometimes! 1 in 10 and never if in E: instead of D:

Forget this...just made up a cd with auto run.
They will have to get over it.

Don't have SIW installed on any machine connected to the internet. I always run it off cd.

If I were a hacker I would look for it and open up secretes.

Off and running......ok maybe just walking.
