boot xp from an old HD

Specs: XP sp3 both, 2.4 dual / 3Gb
Hi
I have a dell inspiron 1720 I use for music/audio. Prior to this I had a carillon which, when I got the dell, I converted to my SQL Server 2008 express machine with office and crystal reports so I could keep uptodate for work. The machine is kaput but the HD still functions so I put it in a caddy and can see all the files. Is there a way to boot from this HD so that I can keep my pleasure and my work separate?

If I understand you correctly & the BIOS supports USB boot, then you can boot that drive.

In a word, no.

XP won't run if it detects major hardware changes from the original install.

Well, you can do that but may not be worth the effort.

I'd think that it may be easier to convert the old install to a virtual machine and then run it that way.
