WHOA NEELY no need to get drastic

I can suggest you get a little more info before you blow up any installations with a system restore. There is a a site which will give you the knowledge to know just what going on behind the seens during boot up, and while your PC is just idle or while your working.

www.blackviper.com has some great guides and information explaining & identifying and explaining each of the Windows services running in WINXP and WIN2000Pro as well as recommendations for whether they are critical, needed or just fluff or system resource hogs. You will also find the pros and cons to turning them off or keeping them running, and there are PC-specific varitations like whether 1 set for a PC which is mainly used for gaming or media, or if its for business ect. The site includes some come third-party software services and drivers which tend to run in the background by default and load at start up (slowing it down greatly) such as Anti virus, or CDRW software ect..

The other recommendation is a nifty little program called bootvis.exe avail. at Microsoft downloads which tunes up and properly orders the dirvers and boot operations to be most efficient. WORKS VERY WELL cut my incredibley slow boot down by a third.

Lastly run msconfig.exe and see what is listed in your registry startup (the start up tab) and uncheck any unnessecary stuff like auto updates for Norton or realplayer or unwanted sneaky stuff like gator.exe or its companion file CMESYS.exe (sp?) which always seems to find their way on to everyones PC and slow it down considerably at one time or another after browsing the internet.

Good Luck and Happy 'Puting to all

System Restore isn't getting drastic.

Furthermore, if the computer was just running fine yesterday, I'd have to go with the system restore as well.

Those services that blackviper will tell you to disable I'm sure were running yesterday when your computer was running fine, so I can almost guarantee you 100% that that is not the problem.

Although once you do get things working again, the blackviper site is a great site to check out.
