Comment:

I have a big problem i need fixed quick. I had a setup of XP Pro on 1 hard drive with boot sector and MCE 2005 on second drive. I have removed the XP drive and just want MCE now but the boot sector is on the old XP Pro drive so i can't boot it, is there a way to give it a new boot sector of its own? I have tried recovery console and get errors about not being able to scan for an operating system. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Well, considering it's XP based I'd say you could do a repair of the installation and that should fix the problem.

I'm not familiar with the MCE version of XP but with regular XP (home/Pro) you start the install from the CD. Continue past the recovery console and you should get to a point where it "finds" an existing operating system and gives you the option to repair it. This is the repair you would choose if it's available.

Again, I'm not sure if this will work with your version and with the way it's installed. I would check on microsoft's site to confirm or wait for a response from someone who has experience with MCE.

Yes Alias, you have gotten yourself into a real big problem.

Changing a drives address (D: to C: for example) and then doing a 'Repair' install is pretty 'IFFY'. XP 'might' be repaired ok, but all your other programs are not going to work because (according to the Registry settings they think they are still on the D: drive ).

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Well, Solved the problem, I can't remember how I'm sorry to tell people but i messed with the recovery console and finally managed to somehow create a new boot sector for the drive, everything works perfect now. Thanks
