Hello all
I have been searching the web for answer to my problem and you seem to have a large data base SO.
Here is the question.
I am trying to recover a delll2400.I do not have the original recovery disk. I tried to use A windows XP disk I had from another computer and use it to put on an operating SYS using the numbers on the case.Did not work.I removed the HDD and formated it( heres the good part)when I installed the HDD I powered it up with out the ribbon connected and the power plug installed.
Fixed my mistake and powered it up and get boot manger is missing.I am booting from the CD drive.
Did I mess things up because of the missing ribbon? If so how do I fix the boot problem?
Is there a boot program I can run with out an OP sys on the computer.Sounds like a dumb question but I am grasping at straws.
Thank you for any help.

The Dell product key won't work with the non-dell install disk as you discovered.
When you formatted the harddrive in another machine you removed any old bootfiles from it and that is why you are missing the bootmanager when you try to start up now.
You need to go into BIOS and set CD as first boot device.
That still doesn't resolve your product key dilemma.

you may be able to obtain a Dell install disk from ebay

Thank you Richard59.
I had more problems to come.I found the boot manager problem was because I did not burn the disk as A boot image. Then I had to find a dell disk .still the code did not load.So I am going to dell to get the original recovery disk from dell and that SHOULD fix the problem. If not I can use it for a X-mas tree stand.Put the tree in and pack it with rocks to support the tree. Fixing old dogs is fun, Pun intended.
Thanks again
