Generally speaking, the procedure for booting linux using the NT bootloader (which XP still uses) is as follows:
1)boot linux by whatever means necessary (I usually use a boot disc until this procedure is done)
2)load lilo (or grub or whatever) on the first sector of your linux /boot partition (or on the first sector of the / partition if you don't have a seperate /boot one)
3)enter this command:
dd if=hda2 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
This assumes your /boot partition is hda2. You can find out what it is by typing "mount" with no arguments. You will need to be root to execute the dd command above.
4)mount a dos floppy and copy bootsect.lnx to it.
5)reboot into windows. copy the file into c:\bootsect.lnx
6)edit c:\boot.ini in notepad, adding this line at the end:
c:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"
Hopefully, all goes well. I have used this successfully for NT and Win2K
On the other hand, WinXP apparently has serious bugs in the bootloader, even though it is functionally identical to the previous ones. The most likely problem you will encounter is that one or the other of your boot choices (ie XP or linux) will fail to boot, giving the message:
Windows XP could not load because the file hal.dll is missing or corrupt.
This is not a conflict just with linux. I have now seen literally dozens of posts here talking about the same problem with dual boot XP/98 setups. Worse, people can't even seem to agree on the symptoms. Some people say XP won't load, some say 98 won't. In my case, I'm on the board now because my XP boots fine, but when I choose linux i get the error. I found that particularly wierd since the error says "windows xp could not load" when I wasn't trying to load it at all... Having almost completely struck out here, I may have to resort to using grub or lilo to boot XP instead...although the procedure is a little more in depth.
Anyway, hope this helps somebody.
Good luck.
Hunter.
