I have a computer running winXP, and it has just recently started freezing on bootup. I know there were no hardware changes made to the machine, but I don't know about any software changes because my sister is the primary user of this computer. When booting in safe mode, the system freezes as Mup.sys like with most other problems. When not booting in safe mode, the after checking for a bootable cd, the screen goes black and a grey status bar at the bottom of the screen fills up then freezes after filling up. I can't find mine winXP cd right now to try repair console, so if you have any ideas that do not involve the cd, that would be great!
Thanks for your suggestions.

well if you can find your xp cd you can disable each service that fails. However, my guess is that even if you disable mup.sys the next service will freeze too.
theres many things it could be...software corruption or even perhaps hardware failure.
Theres always reinstalling from your disc...yeah...you are probably going to need your disc to fix the problem. You might be able to try using the Last Known Good Configuration to get into your OS if your lucky.www.monkonline.tk

Try this and if it works please post back and say so.
Remove all your USB devices that are connected to that computer and see if you can boot up then in safe mode...If you can uninstall the usb controller and then reinstall it and use updated drivers from your mobo manufacturers site.

The only usb item I had plugged in was a usb mouse that was plugged into a ps/2 adapter. I tried disabling usb in the bios, but to no avail. And I did try Last Know Good Configuration, but that froze too.
