As soon as you saw the screen with "To boot from CD push any key" you were booting from the CD. . .
As soon as that happened the WinXP started running its install routine from the CD. . .
But it doesn't like something about your PC, hence your black screen. . .
Check your graphics card, RAM and reset your BIOS (remembering to check the boot sequence of course!). It may be worth while removing all superfluous cards (sound, Modem etc) and re-seating the Processor, RAM and Graphic Card to be sure.
Good Luck. . .

You might have to install a basic dos program then install xp again. Claims that you can always boot from cd if you bios detects the cd-rom first does not always work. I ahve experienced it, so I installed MSDOS6.2.2 first then booted from my xp-cd and it worked, if you need the dos email me and I'll let you know where to get it.
