I made a boot CD so I could boot into my laptop (no floppy). I used a Windows boot floppy to make it - put the files onto a bootable CD using Nero. It boots my desktop quickly, but won't boot my laptop at all. Both machines have XP, although the laptop is SP1 and the desktop is SP2. What's wrong, what if anything do I need to do differently? How can I boot the laptop if not by CD? I want to format one partition on it.

Thanks in advance. Noel

Hi Noel, Bob, hello everyone,

"I want to format one partition on it".

As long as it's not the "system" partition you can format it from WinXp.

I agree with Bob to check the boot order in the
BIOS for the cd boot issue.

Many older CDROM drives have uh, problems reading "burned" cd's.

In addition, my experience with laptops is that their small delicate drives tend to be a little "fussy."

One thing you might try, if you did not, is select a lower "burn speed."

I'm at the point here that I burn almost all my cd's at 24x, and have had much better luck.

Hi All,

Thanks for the comments. XPUser, I made a boot CD by copying boot floppy plus other files to a directory and using Nero 7 to make a bootable CD with those files on it. It boots and you then have access to the other files as well (FDisk, Format, etc.) As I said, it boots my PC just fine.

Also, I did have the BIOS set to boot from the CD first, apparently the laptop just can't "see" it for some reason. I copied the files to the CD at 4x!! And the only firmware update is for the laptop is the chipset and I re-installed those divers and still it won't boot the CD.

The partition I want to format is the OS partition. I want to re-install XP on my C drive...

And I can't get Partition Magic to boot either :(
