Laptop: Sony pcg z1a i think
Problems:
-No floppy drive
-BOOT CD's don't work, i tried win2k, winxp
-if i let it start normally, i get the following message: "Operating system not found."My bios load order is:
floppy
optical drive
hard drive
network booti also have 2 usb ports and a MagicGate
how do i reinstall xp if it won't boot from the cd? would network boot work? and how would i implement it?

unless the laptop bios supports booting from USB a usb floppy won't work.
Most boot from cd require you to strike any key [spacebar] to boot from cd. Sounds like you are skipping this and it goes on to boot the next device in the bios list.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Some BIOS boot order lists list the items you can boot from and then have a mark next to them stating that they are available to boot from.
Example
+ Floppy
CD-ROM (optical)
+ Hard Drive
+ USB Device
Network BootMay want to check that. Just an Idea.

only the Hard drive has a + next to it. and only sometimes. and if it does... when i expand it, it's just a blank line.

I just tried pressing space and enter while the VAIO splash screen was up but it just went to the good ol' "operating system not found"

Azzman,
Did you notice a way to add the symbol next to another device. (These instructions are usually found somewhere on that page) Try adding the symbol to the CD-ROM.I think for mine it is the space bar to make the symbols appear/disappear
Shaadow

Try removing and then reinstalling your CD-ROM drive. Before installing, check to see if there is a pin bent or broken or shorted in the IDE connector.
A side note: Do you see the message " Press any key to boot from CD-ROM" or similar wording ? You should press any key, such as spacebar, within 5 seconds when you see the this message not earlier.
If you do not see it, there must be something wrong. Are you sure your CD-ROM drive is working ?

I can only spacebar the Hard Drive option sometimes. If i can, then a blank line forms under hard drive. i also tried Shift+1 which disable certain boot options to no avail.

However, when i try disabling the hard drive from booting. i get a menu to boot off the cd-rom (optical) and when i press enter, i still get "operating system not found"
"If you do not see it, there must be something wrong. Are you sure your CD-ROM drive is working ?"
It is there only for a split second but it says the the CD-rom has been found and identifies the model number.

This seems to be my next course of action. however i doubt it since the laptop has probably never been opened up and fooled around with.
