I recently did a regular registry cleanup and it seems to have accidentally damaged something. All BMP files have reverted to the default "page" icon that Windows uses when it doesn't know what kind of file it is, and the File Type is listed as "Error". They do still open properly with Picture and Fax Viewer like they always did, oddly enough. Where exactly should I tweak the registry to get it back to what it was?

That's weird... it cut off my topic. The topic line SHOULD read:

BMPs are an "Error" (reg. problem)

I'm guessing it's the quote that did it.

- Open My Computer
- Click on the Tools menu and choose Folder Options.
- Click the File Types tab
- Scroll down to the BMP file type and select it.
- Click the Advanced button
- Click the Change Icon button
- You can change the icon to anything you want, but if you want the default icon for the BMP file type, browse to the following file:
c:\windows\system32\shimgvw.dll
that dll contains the little page with paint brush icon.

Okay, that solves the icon problem but it still says the file type is "Error". Not only does this look ugly, it can sometimes throw me off as I sort _everything_ on my computer by file type.
