Blue Screens and Freezes

My computer has been progressively getting worse: It alternatively goes suddenly to a Blue Screen saying Page Fault in Unpaged area, and to uninstall recently intalled hardware. No recently installed hardware.

Or it progressively freezes program by program until even the cursor is frozen.

Usually jiggling or replugging IDE cable clears it up for a while. I have replaced hardrives and IDE cable.

Thinking about a new machine if I can't solve the problem. What is the least proprietary of the factory computers? Can an IDE HD be slaved or otherwise run in a SATA machine?

The PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (it helps to post the error correctly) usually indicates a RAM problem. Try testing your memory with memtest86.

Now that I can see again after cataract surgery, I ran memtest 86 and it found no errors.

I reviewed my old RAM which had been replaced with what Crucial recommended. Old RAM was PC2100 266 Hz 256 MB, new was PC2700 333 HZ 1 GiG. Motherboard spec says will take 3 x 1 Gig.

Would the RAM speed cause problems?
