The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable"
argh!
i really really need help with this one...i just finished typing my big essay and i need to print it...but i can't get to it, now that my system won't load =(
am i out of luck...shoot...its 25% of my final mark...theres no way i can write it again :*(
please help someone
thanks

Reboot your pc while holding down F8 key. At the Advanced Options Menu, select Last Known Good Configuration(your most recent settings that worked). Hope this helps. Bye

Can you boot into safe mode and then use system restore to the last known good point when everything was working?

why not boot from the cd & choose to repair it, xp will be installed over top of itself & u shouldn't lose any files

when i choose any of the options...safe mode etc...they take me back to that blue screen
i can't find my start up disk anywhere...how can i access my winxp cd to fix this?
is there any where that i could download the winxp startup?

i still have the blue screen and i can't seem to access my 'c:'
are these related...meaning if the registry is weird like it is...would i not be able to access the drive?
i have two drives and can access the data on the other one
i can't reinstalled winxp pro...i don't have a start up disk...and when i am able to access the cd rom and try to install xp, it says that i can't in dos mode
i have little hair left on my head...i think i've pulled most of it out now

Whatever you do, do *not* choose Repair Installation! If you have saved your work in the My Documents folder, you may loose all the files in there. I myself have used a repair recently and lost *all* my work and had to start all over from scratch. i suggest that u simply reinstall over the existing xp so you will not lose any important files.
PS: If you cannot access C: chances are that you have converted/formatted that partition into NTFS.

Webtree info gives instructions on preparing xp startup disks when you cannot boot into windows. Since you have not prepared a startup disk, visit http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307545 and try following this procedure. Good luck.

it is ntfs...but what does that mean?
i am currently in the repair option...are my files lost? if in my docs?
how can i reinstall?

NTFS is the NT File System, different from FAT, the File Allocation Table. For some reason (forgot) DOS and Win9x/Me cannot read NTFS partitions, which is why you could not read C: with DOS boot disk.
If you want to be on the safe side with no files lost, simply copy your work folder and place it on C: or some other non-system partition, so your work will not be lost. Now you can repair with no worries.
To reinstall, if you want to, simply install XP over the existing one. You may or may not lose your personal files in the My Documents Folder.
Good Luck!

i can't get the cd to recognize my c:....ohh this is really frustrating...
i tried to repair but it won't find anything in c: :(now i really know what microsoft is soo hated
at this point...i just want to reinstall...but i can't even get that to work

I would check your MEMORY,
I just went thru hell doing everything that was described by everyone to no avail,
it came down to a bad stick of RAM!!!
Go figure---Try it!

I also have the same problem, the same error, the same blue screen of death. We can help each other.email me.
Bye

guys i am having the same problem as you both. can u please help me out?...i am getting the registry file failure too
anyhelp is much appreciated.

hello guys!
I just found this knowledge base article titled "How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from Starting (Q307545)" on Microsoft web site. Here's the link to it. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307545
Hope this helps you and me. yeah.. I'm having the same problem too. But on Windows 2000. Good luck!

One of our workstations just went down with this same exact message. It's a W2K Pro SP2 box. Hard to believe We're all having memory or hardware failure at the same time.
Is everyone else running Norton Antivirus? Updated recently?Paul

Just got a brand new system put on WIN XP and i kept getting this msg. Had to reinstall Win98 before i could load WIN XP again but now i have created a dual boot with WIN98 so i dont have to reformat etc etc unknown solution will chk out the MS site if anybody knows the cause pls email me. only thing i can tell u is to do a dual boot to save the hassle of reinstalling WIN98

Iv experinced the same blue memory failure screen today, it was weird I restarted and boom there it was I wasnt doing anything different than usual too. If someone that has been through the same problem could help me I would be so greatful. It is important that I DO NOT lose my files in "My Docs"
Oh, BTW im using win XP Pro on a AMD system with the same ram that iv been using for the past year.
:(
Thanks for your time.

I have the same blue screen. I hate windows. Bring on Linux!!!!!!
this could fix it though. try it, it will take a while.
