blue screen registry error

I turned on my system that was working fine and I get a blue screen registry file failure cannot load hive(file) systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or alternate is corrupt, absent, or not writeable Any ideas? Of course my system restore was not enabled... Thanks

Boot from the CD and reinstall of XP with the repair option. Hopefully, it will get you back and running. System restore isn't that bad after all!! You can set it not to use that much space and it will save you from times like this.

When I booted from the CD and selected repair I was taken to a windows prompt... What do I do from there?

I do recognize this error, as I suffered the same fault message myself many a time. In my case it turned out to be a bad stick of RAM. I did try to repair using the recovery console on the installation CD the first couple of times but it told me that no operating system was installed. Sorry to say you may have to reinstall XP from fresh.
