What's more likely to be responsible for a
"KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" notice, a
fault in XP Home or a physical defect in the
motherboard? I've read it could be either and I'd
like to know before I gamble $200 on a new copy
of XP. The Sony tech guy says replacing XP
with an off-the-shelf copy is not advisable
because the XP version that came with the
computer is customized for the computer, but my
ISP told me I might need to reload XP to solve the
"Error 797" problem (can't find modem or modem
is busy) I started getting about the same time as
the blue screen.A repairman removed an RPC virus from the
notebook, but that didn't fix either problem. He
suggested it could be a fault in the motherboard.
CHKDSK has run more than once as /F and as /R,
but reports no bad sectors. SCANDISK doesn't
seem to be on my machine and, anyway, I read it
could affect long file names.I had not added hardware or downloaded
programs in the days before the crash aside from
an XP security patch. The Sony VAIO system
restore disks won't play in my external CD
machine and the internal drive on which they
would work is broken. Restoring the system to a
previous point did not work either.Thank you.

This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware

You need to get a working cd drive, as I would think that a simple "Repair of XP" would solve the problem.

Look in the event viewer for more clues as to what is going on.
Also you may want to give this a read.
Kernal_data_inpage_error, Please helpYou need to get a CDROM drive to work on your PC. If your CDROM is an external type. You may need to load the SCSI drivers for it onto your PC for it to work.
Post back with what you find in the event viewer.
You can also use Aida32 to find your event logs.
You can find it by Googleing a search for it.
Then download it and install it on the problem PC.

Jamie & Johnw: I get a variety of I/O codes on the
blue screen, but it doesn't stay up long enough for
me to write them down. One time, a digital
snapshot of the screen showed that none of the
codes matched codes in the Microsoft webpage.LL & Dave02: Yes, I suppose the internal CD
drive would help me, but Sony wants more than
$500 to replace or repair it. Repair guys around
here (Iowa City, IA) are reluctant to work on Sony
notebooks. The $500 would be better spent
toward a new notebook, which would at least be
an upgrade over this one, purchased in
November 2002.Dave02: The event viewer only goes back to 5/22,
a few days after the problem started, but since it's
a recurrent problem, I may not need to know what
happened at the beginning. I assume you're
looking only for error items, not information and
warnings. Here are the latest errors:System Error; Category: (102); Error code

an error in EC hardward or firmware, or a poorly
designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an
unsafe manner. Is this the type of information you wanted me to
post? I have a few more errors and a ton of
warnings.%00
