I recently got this error after Windows run chkdsk on startup. So I have to turn off the machine (by holding the power button). After a reboot, I tried "Start Normal" (or something along that line), skip chkdsk and still get the error. So I go ahead and choosed "Last Known Good Config" (seems like that's the only way to boot Windows and not get the error).
I've read that it may have something to do with SP2 (which I installed early last year). So I went and uninstalled SP2 and reinstalled. But nothing. Only difference is when I skip chkdsk, I go to a blank [black] screen.
I really have no idea what's wrong and how to solve it. I don't plan on reinstalling XP any time soon.
Thanks for your time.

You could try a repair using this site as a guide http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
