Hi All,
I've read several posts about blocking certain websites by using the Host files. I have had a certain amount of success with this in the last few days.
Problem is I am having problems blocking overseas websites. For example, we are trying to block youtube on work computers (which has worked) but some users are logging on to the UK youtube. I have tried blocking that website in the Host file, the same way I blocked the regular website, but it does not work.
Any suggestions? We don't just want to block the site in the IE restricted sites area. Too many of our users could work that out and undo that. It would be great to be able to fix the Host file.

You have a menagement problem.
Try firing one employee and see how quickly the word gets around.

You need to route your internet thru a proxy server and put those blocked sites in the proxy deny file.
You will find your time spend working on the hosts file to no avail. Users can easily rename it and get out to where they want to go.
Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/FindInfo.html

Thanks for the info. I am not sure we will be able to do that, as it is a big company and the internet and servers etc are all setup outside of our department.
There are only a handful of abusers on each shift, so we just wanted to block access on their computers, not company-wide. Most of the users would not know enough of computers to know how to find and modify the Host file back.
Thanks though, I will look more into the suggestion about the proxy.
