Blank screen after XP splash screen

I can start in safe mode no problem, but I get a blank screen after the XP splash screen in normal mode. No problems listed in the device manager. I tried disabling my most recently installed device (firewire). Nothing. What else should I be trying?

Go into safe mode, and run SFC /SCANNOW from the Start menu (note the space between C and / ).
This will scan and rebuild all system files which in turn should solve your boot problem. Good luck.
