hi when i start up windows i sometimes get a blank desktop no icons or task bar but cursor works ok restart the computer and they come back again as normal. I notice that it hangs on the welcome screen then the blank desktop appears anyone know what causes this? thanks

Your PC is about to start the Desktop (explorer.exe) but somthing else is about to be loaded first. Like Firewahl or network connection. You can allways hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and in Taskmanager <Programs> - <New Activity> enter "explorer.exe", and the Desktop will appear so you don't have to reboot and can troubleshout the windows startup.
