Ok, I just downloaded Service Pack 1 for XP and now when I try to log in I get this error:

explorer.exe - Unable To Locate Component

This application has failed to start because SHDOCVW.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem.

Is there anyway that I can get around this without having to reinstall windows? I do not have the xp disc, only a "Recovery Disk". I have tried booting up in safe mode but my comp just locks up. Whenever I get to the blank desktop, the only thing that I can do is ctrl+alt+del to get the Task Manager.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type the following line:

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in shdocvw.dll succeeded.\
Shut down and restart your computer

I cant click start.. my desktop is blank. All I can see is my wallpaper. I can view the task manager and run from there. I have already tried to run that but I get this error:

LoadLibrary("shdocvw.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

see if this can help....

Also if you can get into safe mode by using f8 go to start run and type in cmd

at the prompt type in sfc/scannow

See if it will replace the missing int explorer files.

Safe mode doesnt work and I have already tried last good configuration and I got the same error. I did run command.com and did the scannow thing but it prompted me to insert the Win XP cd, which I dont have and my recovery disk did not work either, and after it ran through, it found nothing.

If you have no xp disk then it is on your recovery disk. You will have to set the first boot device to your cdrom and boot with your recovery disk and see what options it will give you. Maybe you can just reinstall xp. It sounds like you had a corrupted install on your sp1 unfortunately.

Sometimes the recovery disks allow you to repair the install.

Good Luck

The recovery disk requires that I format the hd. I was hoping that there was some way that I could just replace that file instead of having to reformat. I can still run apps using the run command but its just explorer that wont run.

If issue still occurs, based on my experience, it might be caused by some corrupt Internet Explorer system files. Let's reinstall Internet Explorer to reload all its components and the corresponding registry keys by performing the following steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, and type the following command in the Open box:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\windows\inf\ie.inf

Note: You may copy this command line and paste it into the Open box, and then run it.

2. Click OK.

3. Restart the computer

Ok after searching through all the folders on the recovery disk I finally found shdocvw.dll. I copied it and pasted it into C:\windows\system32 and rebooted and it worked. Everything seems to be running properly. Should I download sp1 again or do you think the problem is fixed?
