One of my friends is facing this problem:- The computer gives a black screen with blinking cursor.I have turned the USB Emulation off from the BIOS screen. The hard drive has been tested.I have also changed the boot sequence to hard drive as the first boot device. Also cannot boot from the xp cd.The screen goes blank after saying setup is inspecting. I have disconnected all the external devices.

It sounds like there is no OS on the hard drive, or something went wrong while trying to read it. If you go back into BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the cd first, will it actually boot from the xp cd? If not..........CHECK ALL THE IDE CABLES! Replace if necessary. Check all jumper settings as well.
