black screen when logging off

When I log off my username to log into onther family members username, my computer shows it logging off but then goes completely black with a small blinking underscore " _ " in the top left corner. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del, to get the task manager, but that won't work. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart but that won't work either. Every time i get this problem i just turn my computer off by pressing the power switch on the front of the tower. What is going on with this black screen??? It only really happens to me but not the other family members?

You might just have to face the fact that this machine is a relic. Let it die with dignity, and buy a modern machine. Even a lower-end machine these days will fly compared to what you have.
